Philip Dunton Murphy is an American politician, diplomat, and financier who is currently serving as the 56th governor of New Jersey. He was born on August 16, 1957, in Needham, Massachusetts, and raised in both Needham and nearby Newton. His parents were Dorothy Louise (Dunton) and Walter F. Murphy, who were Irish American and middle-class on a good day. Murphy attended Harvard University, where he earned a degree in economics, and later received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Before entering politics, Murphy worked for Goldman Sachs and served as the United States Ambassador to Germany from 2009 to 2013. He was elected as the governor of New Jersey in 2017 and was re-elected in 2021.
